Komainu are sacred animals that are enshrined on the approach to shrines and in front of the main buildings of shrines and serve to ward off evil and misfortune.

Japanese Guardian Dog Culture

Komainu are sacred animals that are enshrined to ward off evil spirits and protect gods and shrines. The beasts on the left and right are of different breeds, the one on the right is a lion with its mouth open in the "A" sound, and the one on the left is a Komainu with its mouth closed in the "Un" sound and horns on its head. Komainu are not only used to ward off evil, but because of their shape, they are also seen as a symbol of protecting people's lives and happiness.

Made from Kimachi stone from Shimane Prefecture, you can enjoy the change in texture.

The stone used is Kimachi stone, a tuffaceous sandstone from Shimane Prefecture. Kimachi stone is known as the raw material for glazes and the stone used in the nationally designated traditional craft "Izumo Stone Lanterns." It is a historic stone material that was also used for sarcophagi and stone chambers during the Kofun period.

The appeal of Kimachi stone is that its appearance changes over time. When the stone is cut, it has a bluish color, but as the moisture gradually evaporates, it changes to a soft brownish color. Even new products have a sense of patina, are easy to attract moss, and blend beautifully into natural spaces.
