阿弥陀如来は、サンスクリット語で「無限の光(アミターバ)」と「無限の寿命(アミターユス)」を意味する名を持つ仏様です。その名の通り、計り知れない光で世界を照らし、尽きることのない命で、人々をあたたかく見守り続けています。
阿弥陀如来は「南無阿弥陀仏」と称えるすべての人を、分け隔てなく極楽浄土へと導くという深い誓い(本願)を立てられました。この教えは浄土信仰の根幹となり、現世での安らぎと、来世への希望を願う信仰の対象として、古来から多くの人々の心の拠り所となってきました。
製作を手掛けたのは、京都の京北町で石彫刻を専門としている石工。大型の石仏や、龍の石像などを多く製作している、仏像の彫刻に長けた石工です。自然な風合いを残しつつ、仏様の表情をしっかりと彫刻した、特別な作品です。
竜山石は、兵庫県高砂市で産出される凝灰岩です。マグマが湖水で冷却されてできた石で、約1700年前から採石される歴史ある銘石です。比較的柔らかい石質で、均質に粘りがあるため彫りやすく、石造美術などの石彫にも好まれてきました。 古くから古墳の石棺や石塔・石仏をはじめ、姫路城や明石城の石垣、近代の建築石材にも広く使われてきました。

Tatsuyama stone is a tuff produced in Takasago City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is a historically significant stone formed when magma cools in lake water, and has been quarried for approximately 1700 years. It is a relatively soft stone with uniform toughness, making it easy to carve and a favorite for stone sculptures and other forms of stone art. From ancient times, it has been widely used for stone sarcophagi, pagodas, and Buddhist statues in burial mounds, as well as for the stone walls of Himeji Castle and Akashi Castle, and as building stone in modern times.
