京都・龍安寺にある有名な「知足の蹲（つくばい）」。刻まれた「吾唯足知（われただたるをしる）」は、仏教の教えの一つで「すでに足りていることを知り、あらゆるものに感謝する心」を表しています。日々の暮らしの中でつい忘れてしまう大事な心を思い出させてくれる存在です。
素材は、島根県産の来待石。灯篭や石仏の彫刻にも多様されている、国産の凝灰質砂岩です。釉薬の原料や、国指定の伝統的工芸品である「出雲石灯篭」の石材として知られています。古くは、古墳時代に石棺や石室の建築に使われたり、鎌倉時代からは石仏や彫刻に使われたりした、歴史ある石です。
来待石は、時間の経過に伴って、表情が変化するのが魅力です。石を切り出した時は、青みを帯びた色をしていますが、次第に水分が抜け、茶褐色の、やわらかな色に変化します。新しい商品でも古色が感じられ、苔が付きやすく、自然のある空間にきれいに溶け込みます。

The famous "Contentment Stone Basin" at Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto. The inscribed phrase "I Only Know Contentment" is a Buddhist teaching representing "knowing that one already has enough and having a grateful heart for everything." It serves as a reminder of this important sentiment that we often forget in our daily lives.
The material is Kimachi stone from Shimane Prefecture. This domestically produced tuffaceous sandstone is widely used in lanterns and stone Buddha sculptures. It is known as a raw material for glazes and as the stone for "Izumo Stone Lanterns," a nationally designated traditional craft. Historically, it was used in the construction of stone coffins and burial chambers during the Kofun period, and from the Kamakura period onwards, it was used for stone Buddhas and sculptures.
Kimachi stone's charm lies in its changing appearance over time. When the stone is first cut, it has a bluish tint, but as it gradually loses moisture, it changes to a soft, reddish-brown color. Even new products have an aged look, and moss easily grows on them, blending beautifully into natural spaces.
