現世利益(この世での幸せ)を授ける菩薩として、広く信仰を集める聖観音菩薩。人々の願いに寄り添うそのお姿は、慈悲と救いの象徴とされています。
観音菩薩は願いに応じて、その姿を三十三にも変化させ、救いの手を差し伸べると言われています。この変化の様子を仏像で表したため、多様な観音菩薩がつくられるようになりました。この石仏は「聖観音菩薩」と呼ばれる、顔が一つ、腕と足が2本ずつの、変化の基本となるお姿です。
船の形状をした飾りのある、「舟形」と呼ばれるかたちです。背中の光背も、丁寧に彫り込んでいます。また、仏像と同じ真壁石で、台石もあつらえました。五輪塔の中台にも用いられる、蓮華の反花(かえりばな)の装飾を施しています。
彫刻を手がけたのは、茨城県で活躍する、伝統工芸士。石仏や石灯籠の彫刻に長けた地元の職人が、一つ一つ手彫りで仕上げました。真壁石は、コブ出し、ビシャン、小叩きといった、磨かない加工の方が、石本来の魅力がでると言われています。こちらの彫刻品も細やかなビシャンを施し、自然石の趣を表現しました。
真壁石は、茨城県桜井市真壁地区で採石される花崗岩です。この一帯は古くから良質な花崗岩の産地として知られ、明治までは「常陸小みかげ」と呼ばれていました。赤坂離宮にも使用されている石材で、関東地区を中心に、国産みかげの代表として知られています。青みを帯びた優しい色目が特徴で、経年により青みが一層増してきます。風化しにくいながらも、使うほどに味が出てくるのが、真壁石の魅力です。吸水率は低くはありませんが、水はけが良く、美しい石目が長年お楽しみいただけます。

The Sho-Kannon Bodhisattva is widely revered as a deity who bestows Gense-riyaku (worldly benefits and happiness). With a serene presence that stays close to people’s prayers, this figure stands as a timeless symbol of compassion and salvation.
It is said that Kannon Bodhisattva can transform into thirty-three different forms to extend a helping hand to those in need. While this has led to the creation of diverse Kannon statues, this particular stone sculpture represents the "Sho-Kannon"—the fundamental form with one face, two arms, and two legs.
This statue features a "Funagata" (boat-shaped) design, including a meticulously carved halo (kohai) on the back. It rests upon a custom-made pedestal crafted from the same Makabe stone as the Buddha statue itself. The pedestal is adorned with Kaeribana (inverted lotus petals), a traditional decorative motif also found on the central sections of Gorinto pagodas.
Makabe stone is quarried in the Makabe district of Sakurai City, Ibaraki Prefecture. This area has long been known as a source of high-quality granite and was known as "Hitachi Ko-Mikage" until the Meiji era. It is the stone used in Akasaka Imperial Villa and is known as a representative example of domestic granite, especially in the Kanto region. It features a gentle bluish color that deepens with age. The charm of Makabe stone is that it is resistant to weathering, yet develops a unique character the more it is used. Although it does not have a low water absorption rate, it has good drainage, allowing you to enjoy its beautiful grain for many years to come.
