こちらのカエルに使用しているのは、愛知県岡崎市産の白石（しろいし）。白雲母と黒雲母の両方をもつ、「両雲母花崗岩」という珍しい花崗岩です。安価で品質が良い石なので、以前は灯篭などの石彫刻品に多く使われてきましたが、現在では採石できません。比較的柔らかい石質で、苔が付きやすいのも人気のポイント。
こちらの灯篭は伝統的工芸品に指定されています。
伝統的工芸品はその地域から産出される素材を元に、伝統的な技法と匠の技をもって作られている工芸品の事を指します。経済産業大臣が指定した技術・技法・原材料で制作され、産地検査に合格した製品にのみ「伝統証紙」を貼ることができます。
伝統的工芸品として認定されるためには5つの条件があります。
●生活に豊かさと潤いを与える工芸品
●職人の手づくりである
●100年以上前から続いている伝統的な技術や技法
●100年以上前から伝統的に使用されてきた材料
●一定の地域において、ある程度の規模を形成して作られてきたものである

The white stone used for this frog is from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a rare type of granite called "double-mica granite" that contains both muscovite and biotite. It is an inexpensive and high-quality stone, so it was often used for stone carvings such as lanterns in the past, but it can no longer be mined. Another reason for its popularity is that it is a relatively soft stone that is prone to moss growing on it.
