Rokusho, one of the three sacred mountains of Mikawa, located in Hanazawa-cho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. Mined since around 1887, it has long been a familiar material for tombstones and sculptures in Aichi Prefecture.
Hanazawa stone is characterized by its strong "toughness." Its soft yet tough texture makes it an ideal stone for carving. It has a fine grain, low water absorption, and high durability. Besides being used for tombstones, it is also widely used for sculptures such as Buddhist statues.
Jizo was crafted by a stone artisan from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Okazaki City is well-known as one of Japan's three major stone-producing areas, with many skilled stone craftsmen. This particular Jizo statue was specially created by a craftsman who has contributed numerous stone Buddhas to temples in the area.
