織部灯篭は、戦国時代の武将/茶人だった古田織部によって考案されたといわれる、シンプルかつ個性豊かな石灯篭です。彼は、現代の茶道に繋がる「茶の湯」を大成した千利休の弟子の一人でもあります。
竿部の形が十字架に似ていることなどから、別名「キリシタン灯篭」とも呼ばれていますが、実際にはキリスト教とは直接の関係はないとのこと。
織部灯篭の特徴は、土台を持たず、竿部を直接地中に埋め込んで設置する構造にあります。これにより高さの調整がしやすく、地形や庭の設計に合わせて据えることが可能です。
主に茶室へと至る露地庭に置かれ、夜には灯をともして、手水(ちょうず)や水くみの際の手元・足元をそっと照らす役割を果たしてきました。

今では採掘できない、白石を使用
使用しているのは、愛知県岡崎市産の白石（しろいし）。白雲母と黒雲母の両方をもつ、「両雲母花崗岩」という珍しい花崗岩です。安価で品質が良い石なので、以前は灯篭などの石彫刻品に多く使われてきましたが、現在では採石できません。比較的柔らかい石質で、苔が付きやすいのも人気のポイント。
経済産業大臣指定伝統的工芸品
こちらの灯篭は伝統的工芸品に指定されています。
伝統的工芸品はその地域から産出される素材を元に、伝統的な技法と匠の技をもって作られている工芸品の事を指します。経済産業大臣が指定した技術・技法・原材料で制作され、産地検査に合格した製品にのみ「伝統証紙」を貼ることができます。

Oribe Lantern
The Oribe lantern is named after Furuta Oribe, a 16th-century tea master and samurai who helped shape the aesthetics of the Japanese tea ceremony.
Because the shape of the pole resembles a cross, it is also known as the "Christian lantern."
However, there is no historical evidence that it was directly related to Christianity.
One of the lantern’s features is its lack of a base.—the post is buried directly into the ground, allowing flexible height adjustment. It was traditionally placed along the roji path to the tea room, softly lighting the way during water drawing and hand washing.
A perfect piece for tea practitioners, garden lovers, or anyone who appreciates the quiet elegance of Japanese design.

Previously, it was commonly used for lanterns and other stone sculptures due to its low cost and high quality, but it can no longer be mined. Its relatively soft texture and moss-friendly properties are also popular features.

This lantern is designated as a traditional craft product.
Traditional craft product refers to items created using traditional techniques and master craftsmanship, based on materials produced in the region. These are designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and only products that pass local inspections are eligible to bear a "Traditional Craft Product Mark".
There are five conditions for certification as traditional craft product:
・Enhances richness and moisture to daily life
・Crafted by artisans
・Utilizes traditional techniques or methods dating back over 100 years
・Uses materials traditionally employed for over 100 years
