What is Datekanmuri Stone?

Datekanmuri stone (だてかんむりいし) is a type of volcanic andesite quarried from Mount Okurayama in the southern part of Miyagi Prefecture. Known for its fine grain and ability to withstand extreme amounts of pressure, it is regarded as a high-quality stone.

Distinct Colors Inside and Out

Datekanmuri stone is unique for its contrasting colors: the outer layer is a reddish-brown due to its high iron content, while the interior is a deep black. This striking contrast gives the stone its singular character, captivating many artists. When polished, the internal black color is revealed, but over time, it gradually oxidizes, transforming to a rust-like hue.

Remarkable Resilience

This stone has a high density, making it resistant to moisture absorption. Its durability allows it to withstand weathering, enabling it to maintain its beauty over long periods. It is primarily used for sculptures and stone monuments.
