On today`s blog, we will be excavating Yame stone, uncovering its characteristics and volcanic touch.
What is Yame Stone?
Yame stone (やめいし) is a type of tuff produced in Fukuoka Prefecture. It is named after the Yame area, including Yamauchi in Yame City, Kamiyama Town, and Kurogi Town. Known for its distinctive black color and soft texture, Yame stone is widely used for stone Buddhas, lanterns, and other decorative items.

Unique Black Surface
Yame stone is a black tuff with a distinctive texture. It formed from volcanic ash during the massive eruption of Mount Aso around 70,000 years ago. Notably, it contains small yellow pumice stones and obsidian mixed together creating a kaleidoscope pattern.
Pliant Stone
With its relatively soft texture, Yame stone is easy to carve and is primarily used for stone monuments, sculptures, stone Buddhas, and lanterns. It is lightweight and resistant to extreme temperatures, making it suitable for use in fireplaces and outdoor settings for many years.
Stone Patina
Yame stone has a property that allows it to absorb water easily, making it conducive to moss growth on its surface. Over time, it develops a natural patina—a thin layer or film of weathered rind that forms on the surface of a rock or other material—that adds depth and character to gardens.
