On today’s blog, we will be excavating Makabe Stone, uncovering its characteristics and appeal!

What is Makabe Stone?
Makabe Stone is a granite excavated from the Makabe district in Sakurai City, Ibaraki Prefecture. This area has been known for its high-quality granite since ancient times, and until the Meiji period (1868 – 1912), it was referred to as “Hitachi Komikage.” The stone has been used in significant structures, including the Akasaka Palace, and is a representative of domestic granite, especially in the Kanto region (Eastern Japan).

Enchanting Blue (Bluish-Tinged Surface)
Makabe Stone is characterized by its gentle bluish hues, which deepen over time. While it is resistant to weathering, it develops more character as time goes on, showcasing the timeless elegance of this stone.
Resilience in Stone (Exceptional Durability)
Makabe Stone is hard and remarkably durable. Its high density and strength, allows its beautiful surface to remain stable and resistant to deterioration as years pass. With low water absorption, it experiences minimal deformation and degradation when exposed to outdoor environments, ensuring that its stunning appearance can be enjoyed for many years.
Products Made from Makabe Stone
ISHIMO offers a variety of products made from Makabe Stone, including Jizo statues and lanterns. The Jizo statues are small figures handcrafted by local stone masons. Each statue is approximately 15 cm tall, which can be easily held in both hands. Despite their simple form, each piece is carved with care and attention. These statues can be enjoyed not only in gardens but also as charming interior decor.

ISHIMO carefully selects only the most high-quality stone materials from domestic production areas, offering products crafted by traditional artisans and skilled stone masons who continue to practice age-old techniques. We invite you to take a look at our online shop!
