You may have noticed Jiz\u014d (\u5730\u8535) standing quietly along roadsides or within temple grounds. There is something familiar and comforting about them, as if they have always been there, watching over people through the ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among Japan\u2019s many stone Buddhist statues, Jiz\u014d are especially common. Yet many people may not know exactly what kind of Buddhist figure they represent. In this article, we will gently explore the basics of Jiz\u014d Bodhisattva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
What Is Jiz\u014d Bodhisattva?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Jiz\u014d is the familiar Japanese name for Jiz\u014d Bosatsu<\/strong> (\u5730\u8535\u83e9\u85a9 \/ K\u1e63itigarbha\u3014\u30af\u30b7\u30c6\u30a3\u30ac\u30eb\u30d0\u3015). The name comes from the Sanskrit word K\u1e63itigarbha, which means: \u201ca being who embraces everything like the earth and stores up virtue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Buddhism, it is believed that after Shakyamuni Buddha<\/strong> (\u91c8\u8fe6\u5982\u6765) entered nirvana (\u5165\u6ec5), there would be a long period before Miroku Bosatsu<\/strong> (\u5f25\u52d2\u83e9\u85a9) appears in this world. During that time, the world is said to be in an age without a Buddha, called mubutsu no jidai (\u7121\u4ecf\u306e\u6642\u4ee3). This period is traditionally said to last 5.67 billion years. Jiz\u014d Bodhisattva is believed to continue saving and guiding all living beings throughout this vast span of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Role of Jiz\u014d Bodhisattva and the Spread of Jiz\u014d Faith<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Jiz\u014d Bodhisattva is believed to travel through the Six Realms<\/strong> (Rokud\u014d\uff0f\u516d\u9053) in order to save all sentient beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Especially during the late Heian period, belief in Jiz\u014d spread widely alongside the growing influence of mapp\u014d shis\u014d (\u672b\u6cd5\u601d\u60f3\uff0fthe belief that the Buddhist teachings were entering a degenerate age).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As anxiety grew over who would save people in such troubled times, devotion to Jiz\u014d became increasingly important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does Ojiz\u014d-sama Look Like?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Meaning of the Objects Held by Jiz\u014d<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Some statues of Jiz\u014d are shown with their hands together in prayer. However, many are depicted holding a shakuj\u014d<\/strong> (\u932b\u6756\uff0fa Buddhist monk\u2019s staff) in the right hand and a h\u014dju<\/strong> (\u5b9d\u73e0\uff0fwish-fulfilling jewel) in the left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The shakuj\u014d is a staff traditionally carried by Buddhist monks during their travels and training. It symbolizes Jiz\u014d\u2019s journey to reach and help those who are suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The h\u014dju is a sacred jewel believed to grant people\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together, these ritual objects (jibutsu\uff0f\u6301\u7269) represent Jiz\u014d Bodhisattva traveling throughout the world to save and support all beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jiz\u014d at ISHIMO<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n
Among the Ojiz\u014d-sama statues offered by ISHIMO, there are also traditional designs holding a h\u014dju<\/em> and shakuj\u014d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
